Special Month: Part 1

Take off those moccasin boots and tie on the runners- it's Breast Cancer Month.
There are some startling facts about breast cancer that you should be aware of every month :

  • One in 27 women will die from it
  • In 2007, an estimated 22,300 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 5,300 will die from it
  • The cause of breast cancer is unknown and cannot be prevented
    75% of all breast growths, whether malignant or benign are discovered during breast self examination
  • 9 out of 10 growths are detected by women themselves
  • As many as 2 million women in North America were diagnosed with breast cancer during the 1990's
  • Since 1993, incidence rates for breast cancer have stabilized and death rates have declined 8 out of 10 breast growths are non-cancerous
  • Male incidence of breast cancer accounts for 2% of all cases
    In 2005 an estimated 150 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 45 of them will die from it
  • On average 415 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer each week
  • On average 102 Canadian women will die from breast cancer every week
